We had to make a film in Music class. It will be uploaded here after the film festival.
Here is my critical reflection on the project:
DOCUMENTARY PROJECT
TY FOOTBALL CHALLENGES (JACK KELLY)
What is our documentary about?
Our documentary is a comedy about football challenges. In the documentary we do two challenges, 'The Crossbar Challenge' (attempting to hit the ball at the crossbar) and 'The Dizzy Penalties Challenge' (attempting to score a penalty after running circles around the ball.) Whoever completes/gets closest to completing the challenges is declared the winner.
How did we come up with this idea?
I originally came up with the basic concept of making a comedy video based around us playing football. I thought of this idea having watched videos of 'The Sidemen' on YouTube for years, who often use football as a gateway to their humour. I knew that we could put our own unique charisma into the video at almost every point, hence why we decided to dress up in ridiculous outfits based around characters we created ourselves. Along with our own creativeness and this source of research we had the outline of our video and it basically went from that point. We didn't go into recording with any ideas we just thought of them on the spot and that's probably why it turned out so well. We wanted the point to 'Not take yourself too easily' to come across a lot in the video.
The Creative Process
First, we each came up with our characters. I played a 'rough' Irish hurling fundamentalist while dressed in a Superman outfit because, why not? Eoghan dressed in clothes that were too small for him, Colin was 'Council Worker Noel Furlong'. Colin's character was sourced from 'The Two Johnnie's' comedy act who are a Facebook sensation and use 'Noel' in their skits. Oran was dressed as 'Jock' from the new RTÉ series, 'The Young Offenders.' The rest of the group were dressed in the most ridiculous clothes they could find just to add to the humour.
The documentary begins with us walking towards the camera in a line as an 'intimidating gang' while the 'Peaky Blinders' theme song plays in the background. We thought this would be hilarious because we all acted extremely serious in the
video but you can't help but laugh due to our costumes. Without editing, the piece wouldn't make sense, however I added slow motion, smoke effects and a filter to add to the scene.
My role in the group was to not only act in the documentary but also to edit the film. I had never edited before, but I quickly got used to the iMovie app and put hours of work into the editing. A lot of the editing was actually very difficult to do so I watched some videos on YouTube to help get better. The editing is probably the most important part of the video as it really helps the type of humour we're going for. It's hard to put a name on what type of humour this is, but the best way to explain it is just 'stupid funny.' Everything is very immature and silly and ridiculous but you can't help but laugh due to the edits. This basically sums up the people in the group as well. I used basically the same editing concept that 'The Sidemen' use in their videos with the music changes and funny clips, however all of the material used was sourced just from my memory of just funny things I've seen on social media, or just searching something blankly up on YouTube and hoping something like what I'm looking for actually exists.
Reflection/Outcome
The documentary came out exactly the way we wanted to,and was even better than we ever expected it would be. We really got our humour across well in it, which of course is everything you want it a comedy. The footage mixed with the music and editing effects and clips just blend perfectly together and we're very proud of the video. If we were to do it again, we would do everything the same way and maybe try add even more to it.
