On Wednesday, the 7th of March our year visited 'Fota Wildlife Park' in Cork. We left the school at 7:15 in the morning. Three hours later we arrived just after 10 o'clock. We were greeted at the gate and led into two classrooms. We played three games divided into two groups. We were then brought to the kitchen. A keeper showed what they fed each animal, how they fed them and what foods they can't eat. I learned that when animals are sick they put their medicine in jam or nutella so the animals will eat it. I didn't enjoy this part because the room was stink. I also learned that to keep their mind active they put food in small containers so they try get it out. We then visited the giraffes and ostriches. I learned that ostriches were probably the most vicious animals in the zoo. They told us how important it is to keep the animals warm and they spend Forty thousand a year on heating alone. We then saw some kangaroos and Maras roaming the zoo. They are not kept in an enclosure. Similarly, Peacocks and other birds are also free to roam. We visited the cheetahs. As Cheetahs are the fastest animals in the world, it's important for them to run. When they are feeding the cheetahs, they hang a piece of meat off a zipline and move it so the cheetah has to catch it's own prey. Similarly they hang meat off trees for lions to catch. We also seen tigers, rhinos, meerkats, penguins, snakes, lizards, butterflies, turtle, gibbons and much more.
Overall I enjoyed our trip to the park. I liked how the animals were treated like they would be out in the wild. I liked that they tried to keep their mind stimulated and that they actually cared for their animals. However, I hated how some of the animals were allowed to roam around the park because some of them terrified me.
